Alaska Journal

In his second year of self-imposed absentee fatherhood following the devastating death of his first wife, Jeffries Wyman headed north. Alaska Journal chronicles his time spent living with Eskimos in 1951, in Alaskan territory where few white men ever ventured.

Following the same approach he adopted in Japan, Wyman lived as one of the Eskimo people, getting in tune with their way of life by living in tents and igloos, eating an all-meat diet, hunting caribou and fishing. His private diary provides an intimate view into day-to-day life, and his vivid watercolor paintings (see slideshow link below) reflect a truly native civilization before westernization—as well as significant artistic accomplishment.

His daughter—herself an experienced travel writer and editor—Anne Cabot Wyman publishes his journal writings and artwork for the first time, leaving readers entranced with a time and place so starkly different from the elite, academic world where Jeffries Wyman began his career as a scientist.
